TAO digital photo key chain – 2009 model… More >>

$8.30 is just way too much for shipping this product. The TAO website charges their full retail, $14.95, but shipping is free. If I don’t like the product and return it, I don’t want to have to eat your $8.30 shipping fee PLUS a 20% stocking fee.
Shame, shame, shame.

I was going to write about how I thought the software could be easier to use, but the pictures looked fine and it worked as described, but then it died on me. I’ll be honest here: I did not attach it to a keychain and carry it around, but I had my doubts if this plastic thing would hold up to everyday use. I know my wife knocks her keychain around often because I see the scratches near the car door handle from her key chain hitting it. What I did was I knocked the keychain on the side of a table with the force I would assume my wife’s keys chain got knocked around. It wasn’t real hard, but I thought it was realistic. Well, when I went to turn it on, it was dead. I tried charging it and holding the “on” button, but it appears to be permanently dead. For all I know it was already dead before I knocked it around a bit (I didn’t turn it on first before my experiment), but the point is, it’s dead. It came in a nice box, though.

After 3 days I used, a green line appeared in the screen. I returned it. Thanks Amazon. I didn’t need to pay return shipping, and they refund quickly.

I never owned a photo key chain and so I don’t have anything to compare with.
This is good product especially considering the price of ten dollars.
A lot of good things about this device have already been told in other reviews. I will confine my review only on negatives. THAT DOESN’T MEAN I DON’T LIKE THE PRODUCT.
Device:
1) Blue frame doesn’t look that good. I wish it was black.
2) I think it is too large and wouldn’t like to carry it around in my pocket.
Picture management software:
1) When this device is connected to the computer via USB, the picture management software automatically comes up. This software is limited in fuctionality. For example, when it first comes up, PC directory structure doesn’t show My Pictures folder. Not even My Documents folder. You will have to navigate to the folder.
2) You can only zoom in so much into a picture. Once the picture occupies the entire frame in the software window, it won’t zoom any more.
3) Only zoom, rotate and crop functions are provided – adequate, but not comprehensive.
Stored pictures:
Just information, no negative points here. The device stores pictures in BMP format at 128×128 resolution. Each file is 48 kb. If you try to export (save) files back to your computer, it will offer to save them in either BMP or DPF file format.
If you have a picture editor software, you are better off processing pictures ahead of time. You don’t necessarily have to crop your picture into 128×128, but crop it into a square image and the transfer utility will reduce it to 128×128.
It will make a wonderful gift.

I have to be honest, I don’t know how much this product will sell for since I got it for free but anything more than $9.99 is too much… where do I start? quality of the product itself, is what you would expect from a no name brand out of China. The LCD quality is very cheap and unless you have a close up of someone, your pictures will look like a stamp. I was pleasantly surprised to see support for Mac but who uses BMP as a format for pictures? no one but TAO. The software built into the frame that you download to your computer is fairly easy to use. It’s a good idea but a poor execution. I give it 3 stars because it does what it supposed to do, I just wish the picture quality would be better.
